Update: Meet Everything New in MacOS Monterey

Officially available for almost two weeks, the new version of macOS is packed with a ton of new features. If you're still hesitant to install it, these five new features should win you over quickly.

On October 25, Apple officially released macOS Monterey, the latest version of their Mac operating systems. After nearly four months of beta testing, Mac users with an eligible machine can now choose to install the new version of macOS on their computer. by going directly to "System Settings" in the "Software Updates" menu.

While the more adventurous will likely have already installed this major macOS update, the more savvy might wait to get feedback from new users first before deciding to take the plunge.

Because, in addition to the likelihood that some commonly used programs will still not work on Apple's new operating system, some Mac owners simply "ditched" their computer after installing macOS Monterey.

Which dampens the enthusiasm a bit, although these problems are still fairly rare on the scale of the number of users worldwide.

Note, however, that some new features available in beta versions of macOS Monterey are not yet available in the stable version of the operating system. This is the case, for example, with SharePlay or the Universal Command function that allows you to use the Mac keyboard and mouse on a nearby iPad.

But if you're still one of those doubters, some new features in macOS Monterey may quickly convince you to cross the line.

Direct text

Since iOS 15 does it so well, macOS now knows how to find and extract text from your images. With Monterey, you can very easily interact with all the text that appears in images, whether they are stored on your Mac or displayed in the Safari web browser. macOS Monterey automatically recognizes text displayed in images and lets you choose to copy and use it in another application after pasting.

the text. Even better, when the selected text is a phone number, address, or email address, macOS offers directly to make a phone call, find your location on a map, or send an email.

iCloud private streaming

Currently available in beta as of iOS 15, iCloud Private Relay is a new service implemented by Apple to protect your Safari browsing by hiding your IP address.

All data sent from your Mac is encrypted and passes through independent Internet streams, preventing the websites you visit from learning your IP address, DNS activity, location, and web activity to build their profile of advertising to target ads to you.

To enable it, go to System Preferences, then under your Apple ID, check the Private Broadcast (beta) setting.

Note, however, that iCloud Private Relay is only available to iCloud+ subscribers, meaning paid iCloud subscribers who signed up for at least $0.99 for the 50GB storage offer. iCloud.

Facetime

This is one of Apple's best projects in macOS Monterey. FaceTime, the audio and video calling app is getting a lot of new features.

All you have to do is start the call by selecting from the application Create a link, which you can then send to your correspondents. They just need to open it in their regular web browser to join your FaceTime call.

Quick note

Quickly taking several notes with a single click, just like you would a small note, without the risk of losing content, is now possible.

With Monterey, Apple introduces a Sticky Note feature that, as the name suggests, lets you quickly create a note, which then automatically syncs with the Notes app to make sure it's backed up.

To quickly take a note, hold the mouse pointer in the lower-right corner of your Mac screen and click the small gray square that appears. A new blank note will open so you can quickly type whatever you need.

Sticky notes are also available under "Add to Sticky Note" from the right-click context menu in Safari after text is highlighted.

In theory, the annotation contains the selected text, as well as the URL of the page in question where you can add your comment. If this feature sounds appealing, it actually, at least for now, still seems a bit wonky as we haven't consistently been able to get it to work properly.

Aerial game

With macOS Monterey, your Mac can become an AirPlay receiver. Specifically, you can now stream your presentations or mirrored videos from your iPhone to your Mac display. It's also possible to use it as an AirPlay speaker: Start a song on your iPhone and play it through your Mac's built-in speakers.

Be warned though, AirPlay on Mac is not available on some older machines. To qualify, you must have a MacBook Pro or Air 2018 or newer, iMac 2019 or newer, iMac Pro 2017, Mac Pro 2019, or Mac mini 2020 or newer.

As for the iPhone or iPad, it will be essential to have an iPhone 7 or later, an iPad Pro of the second generation or higher, an iPad Air of the third generation or higher, an iPad of the 6th or higher, or an iPad mini 5th generation or higher.
